Dr. Shamim Sheikh is a UETian and Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto. He received his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto. Before joining the University of Toronto in 1989, he was a faculty member at the University of Houston for 9 years. He has been involved with UETAC from its inception to developing by-laws working with a dedicated group of UETians, serving as a Director of its Board and now as Patron–in-Chief.
Dr. Sheikh has authored hundreds of research papers in the areas of seismic resistance of concrete structures, development of corrosion-free sustainable infrastructure and effects of climate change on structures. He is a co-author of several design Codes and Standards, Material Specifications and books in his areas of specialization. For his work, he has received awards and accolades from Canada, U.S.A., Japan, China and most recently SItara-e-Imtiaz from Pakistan.
He has a passion for helping students from Pakistan in their higher studies. At the University of Houston, he established four undergraduate Jinnah Scholarships for students of Pakistani origin. Several students from Pakistan including many from UET Lahore have completed their Masters and Ph.d. degrees under his supervision with full scholarships and assistantships. He is an active member of NGO DIL that runs over 130 schools in Pakistan and is working on improving the quality of education there through critical thinking and promoting creativity in students. He has also been instrumental in getting Pakistani students included in the Canadian Government’s Mitacs Globalink Internship programs which provides funds and training of undergraduate students for research.
